Hypnosis is defined as the bypass of the critical factor of the mind and acceptance of acceptable selective thinking. Hypnosis allows us to bypass the logical [left brain] part of our brain to access the abilities of the creative right side of the brain. This trance-like state is achieved by focusing our attention and relaxation to induce a state of high suggestibility. The best way to explain hypnosis is through the example of Adam and Eve. Adam represents the left brain; the logical part of our mind that analyses information and make sure that it is factual before it accepts it and allows it into the subconscious. Eve, on the other hand, represents the right brain; the part that is responsible for creativity, imagination, artistic abilities, emotions, memories, visions, intuition and day dreaming. The subconscious mind also regulates the body automatic functions such as heart beat, breathing and brain activity just to name a few. When Adam is focused on something, he leaves Eve vulnerable to all kinds of outside influences such as a snake in the garden.
Truth is, hypnosis is a natural state we go in at least several times a day. When we are watching a movie and we are highly focused on the movie, it brings out all kinds of emotions whether it is fear, sadness and profound love. We flinch at the buildup of suspense in a horror film. Just as we feel profound love during a romantic film. The same concept applies when we are immersed in a really good book. Highway hypnosis is another form of hypnosis. You ever drove down a highway for long periods of time and you found that you lost track of the last 10+ minutes. Most people tend to find therapy in long road trips due to highly focused attention on the road and the hypnotic lines on the road. This leads to the subconscious mind to be exposed leading to daydreaming and other revelations and profound thought. It is common that athletes indirectly associating hypnosis to the critical factor of their success. Athletes are “in the zone” when they are relaxed focus deeply on the subject at hand, blocking out most of the stimulus around them.
